Scientists at the Boston University School of Medicine conducted a study which revealed that using iPads to pacify children may harm their development. Results of the study, published in the journal Pediatrics, show that giving your child an iPad to calm down and avoid a tantrum can stunt his or her emotional development. Children have to find their own way to self-regulate their feelings, and allowing them to use iPad whenever they feel sad, angry, or disappointed prevents them from doing so.

Results of this research were presented at the International Ergonomics Association congress in Melbourne in August 2015.

Tips for better posture

There are many things that parents can do to help their children with posture correction. They include the following:

  • No TV, iPad, and other devices in the bedroom
  • Limit time spent on iPad
  • No iPad use before bedtime
  • Encourage physical activities, reading, puzzles and board games and other types of real-life fun
  • Encourage child to sit properly in the chair while using iPad
  • Place bean bag or a cushion on child’s legs to enable them to use iPad in an upright position
  • When using iPad to type documents, children should use separate keyword that will allow them to sit properly
  • Children should use iPad with both feet on the floor and back supported
  • Schedule iPad and screen-free exercise time to strengthen their muscles
  • Encourage child to get up and move every 10 to 20 minutes
