In the last decade alone the state of dating has undergone something of a facelift and people are now meeting each other in ways which very few people would have considered back at the turn of the century. Recent research has shown that more people are meeting each other online than has ever happened before, and that fewer people are meeting in a spontaneous way. Currently the most common way of meeting people is in the workplace followed by meeting through a web based service.
Given the changes we have already seen, we take a look ahead to see what dating could look like in 2020.
The amazing forward strides which we are seeing in virtual reality look to continue and you may very well be having a virtual date with a real person as early as next year. We have already seen examples of people asking their partner’s for their hand in marriage over a VR interaction, and in 2020 things could go one step further. Just imagine meeting someone who lives on the other side of the world, and enjoying an awesome date with them in a virtual cafe, the only thing that you’d be missing out on is the physical touch, but there are no doubt plans for that to happen in the coming years.
Dating companies already have smart algorithms which they use to make a match and we can expect to see these growing in intelligence in the coming year. We are a little way of making DNA matches but thanks to smarter data and a fuller picture on people’s internet activities, the algorithm will be able to increase its success rate. What this means for the singleton is that they can count on more chances of meeting the right person first time.
Something which many of the dating apps are seeking to improve on is ensuring maximum service for their users. There has been a lot of issues around the use of fake accounts, catfishing and worse as a result of dating apps, something which the providers have been very keen to put an end to. There will be more vetting, tighter security protocols so that the clients can use these services with the only risk being a bad date, something which cannot always be avoided.
We are closer to people than ever before and this is going to help people date over longer distances, without having to miss them. You only need to look at the SpaceX company for example who expect to open the first of their Hyperloop constructions next year, which they believe to be able to travel at 500mph. At that speed a girl living out in Los Angeles could easily get herself down to Austin for a date in around 2 hours! Just imagine a booty call like this!
A company called UnderSkin is just about to launch some exciting technology which will give us an insight into a person’s emotions, scary stuff. This works thanks to something which is called a ‘smart tattoo’ which will glow whenever a person feels happiness, love, sadness as well as many more emotions which it will be programmed to react to. And so next year when you are getting your daily espresso, you may be able to see just how that barista feels about you, allowing you to ask them out with confidence which you may not have had before.
The future could very well be bright for singletons.
